Illuminating the difference between LED vs. traditional string lights

Holiday decorating in a modern home wouldn’t be complete without holiday lighting! With the whole world going green, isn’t it time to change out your holiday lighting? What is the difference between LED and traditional string lights? Anyone who is used to hanging traditional icicle lights knows they should not string more than 3 strands together. These same folks know that 3 strands do not cover much ground. Plus, it seems every year you have to buy new lights, since some get damaged during the packing and unpacking, rendering the entire strand useless. Most of us do not have the patience to test which one is damaged.

LED lights are a major improvement in holiday lighting. They are kind of like the “seedless” watermelon of the lighting world. One wonders what they did before the new invention. LED stands for “light emitting diode”. They use less electricity (80-90% less!!), and generate less heat. They last longer because there is no filament to burn out, and the plastic bulb is more durable than glass. Plus, plastic bulbs do not lose their vibrant colors. Finally, you can string as many as 20 strands together safely. Are there any disadvantages to LED? Yes. They are currently about 30% more expensive than traditional holiday lights. This should not deter anyone from purchasing LED lights, however, considering the energy and extension cords savings, and the fact you do not have to continually replace the lights every year.

LED lighting comes in a myriad of different forms, colors, and bulbs shapes. You can find solar string lights as well for the outside, which saves money as it allows for placement in areas where energy sources are usually inconvenient. LED lighting, in general, tends to emit a cooler, more intense light. Problems with earlier LED lighting ranged from “too blue” or “not natural”. In other words, it wasn’t what most people were used to. Now, LED lighting looks very similar to traditional string lighting but with more light and color intensity.
